Flipside flops
After what are reported to be huge losses the Flipside Cafe across from the Boise Co-Op has closed. Another example of upscale not quite working, even in the northend.
Bar Update-Lush but quiet
The new Lush on Main is well turned out, but Dark. The walls are covered with lots of mirrors bounce the limited light around. With a cool flame that twists upfront Lush is working for a very hip metropolitan feel. It seems like it just might work.
The service was solid, but I was just about the only customers Thursday night. Hopefully with some advertising and promotion this martini bar will get a crowd. A few uppies scattered about would help the decor work.
On a side note, as Boise grows and we get some tourists dollars, you would think some of these more “big time†urban concepts would start to work. So far the high end , high concept locations like and Andre’s and even Pair have struggled a bit to combine Boise’s traditional sensibilities with all the hip movers and shakers. Maybe Lush can help drag us into the next century of hip!

Bar Update-Hanger! No more!
It is definitely over for the big blue Hanger. Here are exclusive pictures.
As you can see the old Hanger has been gutted. Looks like the contractor is standing at the old bar and it has been saved from distruction. Could be the location is being remodeled into a new liquor venue. Trying to track down the new tenants and find out what happened to Carl and his liquor license.
Freedom Sunset
Does this look like a Life Guard tower?
It is a guard tower, but the purpose is to aid in the training and protecting our freedom. If you head out way past the prison. Pleasant Valley road runs through the National Guard Gunnery range. This is a sighting tower near the southern edge of the range.
John Nemeth's CD Come and Get It-oops!
OK this review is true. It is however for John's 1st solo cd that was released June of 2004
Come and Get It
Went to CD Baby and had a listen. The first thing locals will notice is that several of the songs are familiar. Although the arraignment is cleaner and lyrics have changed a bit, it is great fun to hear old “Fat John and Frim Fram†standards like “Romance Without Finance."
John is big time, BIG TIME. With Junior Watson at his side John’s powerful voice and harp playing, swing, bop, and jump to make this disc great fun. Read Boisee.com's June 2005 interview for some insight on John and his progress.
Bar Update-Hanger!
Apparently Carl at the Hanger was not as good as at ass smooching as he needed to be. With Ted watching, Clay and the Carley clan have given him the bums rush. Gonna' miss that big old blue bar.
It's done!
Bar Update-Pengilly’s
Looks like it’s up to the highest bidder at Pengillys. That most likely means the pop/jazz star Curtis Stiegers' deep pockets will win out. Still, I hoping the staff can pull it out. Stay tuned.

Bar Update-The Hanger
Hangin’ low. The Hanger was closed for New Years. Cant find out of it was landlord or or liquor broad trouble. Boisee is thinking the Bllueest bar in town is done.

Oklahoma-Boise State Fiesta Bowl Prediction
Early, BSU will go down 14 points. They always do! The Sooners will sigh with relief and begin to plan for next year.
Second quarter. Down by 14 BSU’s Korey Hall grips an interceptions and scores. 14-7. Sooner fans don’t even notice. A fluke. Paul J speaks of a small shift in momentum. Oklahoma goes 6 and out. ESPN announcer Herbstreet pipes in with “Hey is this games changing?†TV sidekicks laughs! Boomer fans still in bar across the street
Boise gets a long kick return from Q. Jones and start on the 40. After a series of 6 and 8 yard runs by Ian Johnson, Z nails a perfect fade pass to Naanee and BSU ties the game at 14.
The BOY C -STATE cheer rocks the house. The Broncos head to the locker room Even Steven's.
Third quarter, both Adrian Peterson and Ian Johnson run well, but penalties and dropped passes stall each team drives. The score still tied at the end of three! Espn mentions “that the Broncos are amazingly still in this thing?†Paul J speaks of the big mo and Z and Johnson get those grins.
It is down to the final 15 minutes of the biggest game in BSU history. No one east of the Rockies believed. No one with a “Idaho Alumni†license plate believed. OK, I was a bit worried myself. The guys in Blue, they believed, in them self's, their couch and the system. So, the forth quarter is all Blue and Orange. Ian's famous patience pays off, and Zabransky has the quarter of a life time. Every pass sticks and he shares the wealth with 4 different backs catching balls. Early in the quarter after a 22 yard run to the 3. Z bootlegs in for a touchdown.
That’s right folks BSU up by 7. The ESPN guys don’t know what to say. No one wrote them a script for BSU having a chance to win. In the KBOI booth The Voice of the Broncos has lost his voice and Tom Scott has to take over. In true BSU style they recover an sneaky little onside kick then stall on the 43. Sooner ball. Suddenly awake, those Boomer fans still coherent cheer their team with Boola boola or some other song they stole from Yale or was it North Carolina? Almost works, but Hall drags an another ball out of the sky and BSU is back in the charge. Driving slowly down the field the Blue and Orange cross the mid stripe and than are stopped at the 23 yard line and are forced to attempt a feild goal. Montgomery nails it for three more.
Stunned and defeated. Oklahoma fades to a 24 to 14 loss at the hands of the soon to be #5 BOISE STATE BRONCOS.
That’s the story!-No need to play the game!
Bogus Basin
It was one of those near perfect days. Sunshine, fresh fluffy snow and my daughter to ski with. The trees were draped in a dramatic crust of Hoarfrost. Some trees even had movie set perfect ice sickles glistening in the afternoon sunshine. The wide vistas of back country Idaho amaze if you looked north. Look south and see the stark contrast of the chaos of the Treasure Valley.
Bogus Basin has grown into a fantastic resort. With 7 lifts, two lodges. (Why does JR need another thing named after him?) Yurts, halfpipes, tube hills, and a nordic center. Bogus is no Sun Valley, but bottom line, there are few cities as grand as ours that can boost such a wonderful recreational facility so close.

Take a look at this Music Video from KTVB.com. The audio comes from KIZN, I think the video was done by the "smart son" Don Day.BSU gon b BUCKIN’
What is that feeling? It is the ever growing, quiet, subtle belief that BSU can win, yes win the Fiesta Bowl>> Go Blue

Pengilly's
Pete’s is definitely in play. Several offers are being entertained by the 82 year old Faye Pengilly and her family. After a mere 30 years the clan is apparently ready to sell. Faye has kept daily tabs on the tabs since at least when Pete passed and her kids are ready for her to enjoy life without a bar.
As I said in an earlier story, Nueroloxian, Alan Ireland and Jazz star Curtis Stigers
are in the mix. However, don’t count out the staff and/or customers. A little inside knowledge leads Boisee to bet on a staff member!
Who's House?-Our House!
Bob Stoops, the Oklahoma Sooners football coach, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Oklahoma Sooner flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity, Bob," said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here." Bob felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house.
On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a three-story mansion with, a bright blue turfed yard, blue and orange picket fence, a 50-foot tall flagpole with an enormous BSU Bronco flag, and in every window, he could see Bronco fans. Bob looked at God and said, "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question.
I was a good coach, I won a national championship in 2000,
4 Big 12 Championships, 8 bowl game appearances including 5 BCS Bowls."
God said, "So what do you want to know, Bob?" "Well, why does Chris Petersen, The BSU coach, get a better house than me?" God chuckled and said, "Bob, that's not Coach Petersen's house; that's mine."
Thanks Lissa!
For the rest of us?
In some modern cultures, December 24th is the day of Festivus. Enjoy!
