In the old days as you traveled Southern Idaho and Northern Nevada. The “Stinker†(home of Fearless Feris) station was about the only independent gas station. The big guys like Conoco, and American had most of the gas tied up.
One of the way the Stinker Stations competed was with a series of roadside ads. On one side there was a normal three miles to gas sign. On the other sign something witty. My favorite was placed in a field near Bliss. Lava rocks were strewn over the landscape. Their natural shape rounded and most of the boulders are around three feet around. As you went by at 50 or 60 mph, they did (still do) look like blackwater melons. The rocks are still around, the signs are only photographs and memories.
