Idaho City-Blues in the Schools

It was a blues road trip. The Boise Blues Society Blues in the Schools loaded up and headed out of town to Idaho City. Teacher Warren Barnes had his Idaho City High students prepared for a little blues.idahocity-web.jpg Ken started off with a little boogie woogie, Richard Soliz added his classic Texas guitar, Pinto’s own bassest Greg handled the back beat with the help of Gary on the congas. add the easy drum style of student Steve and our merry band was in the groove. After a brief history lesson the kids took turns playing, clapping and digging the blues.

Ken lead the Idaho City kids on a musical journey. Moving from traditional blues up to and including a more rock based style. .

idahocity2-web.jpgThe best part? Watching a ring of kids playing and smiling to the blues after class

Next stop back to my old stompin’ grounds. Borah High and Mr. Sullivans jazz band.

Conventional Wisdom

Was wandering aimlessly on the old internet tonight where I came across a music recommendation site. The first recommendation!!!! Boise’s own Built to Spill. The track was Conventional Wisdom from You in Reverse Doug Martsch has a winner here. His song writing is a prefect match to the mellow quality of his voice.Buy a copy at the record exchange or . . . Or CD Universe. http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/7042173/a/You+In+Reverse.htm BTW "You in Reverse" is in the top 10 in sales at CD Universe.

Wait 15 minutes!

Locals will tell you if you don't like the weather turn around! Here you can see the the blue sky and sunshine peaking in under the rain clouds, and rolling in over the mountains from the south.cityveiw-web.jpg

Nick Moss

abby.jpgThe show was great. Absolutely, however the star of the show was a young lass by the name of Abby Johnson. Nick brought Abby up to the stage, her excitement was endearing. After a minute Nick handed the young lady a bucket with "band tips" written on it, now don't get ahead of me. After a bit of pore me from the band, yeah, you got it. The band sent Abby out into the crowd. Been to a few shows in my time, but this had to be the best idea for getting tips I have ever seen. Abby was a trouper, she went from table to table and collected more than a couple of bucks. Nick brought her back and let her "sit in" and paid her with some cd's. It was very fun. Look out Stacie (mom) I am afraid your daughter may soon want to find her way back to the stage.

Nick Moss & the Fliptops

NickMoss_small.jpgThis is the show your workmates are going to be talking about Thursday morning. If you don't go, you are going to feel so left out.!!! The Rose Room Downtown Boise April 12th, Wednesday

Inspired By Peter Schott?

A Sports bar inspired by Peter “Gooten Ah’ppetite” Schott. Wonder what the inspiration is? What do past landlords, customers, investors and employees think of “Peata’s” inspiration? You can almost hear Jim Borton and the many former “colleagues” of Mr. Shott cringe when they hear this ego driven radio ad.Me i cannot imagine setting foot in any bar or restaurant “inspired “ by Peter Shott.

BTW-how many Schotts do you get, before you quit and retire to a trailer park in Idaho City?

Jon Duane & Chris Kelly?

Corporate radio triumphs again. If you wake up to the radio, you have noticed that almost all of the stations have changed the way they program in the morning. The latest causalities are Jon and Chris at KIDO. Earlier 100.3, replaced the Boise weekly "# 1 dj" Big J with the national Mancow. Big Jack at Kool was fired and a new country station was created.

From what I am hearing Chris and Jon were locked in a battle over style and substance. The locals wanted a more free form and Idaho based radio show. The suits from Clear Channel tended toward safer canned material. Final score Boise -Two, San Antonio(home of Clear Channel) Zero.

As a former radio show producer and announcer, I can tell you that it scares the Bejesus out of executives when they are not in TOTAL control of air waves. Long gone are the days when a DJ chose their own songs or even the words they speak. I was fired as one of the 1st acts when Journal took over KF95 (now the River.)

BTW, in an surprisingly deceptive effort to appear local, one station flew the morning team in from wherever they record their show to give away a truck at a local dealership.

The good news is that Big Jack is likely to be returning soon, hopefully the same is true of Jon & or Chris.

So the ever changing "River Morning Show," and all the rest of the locals must be a little nervous. Bet even Paul J is putting a little extra in savings for retirement.

Like the Daily paper, radio is less important in today's world. It might be to much to ask that the content and the people that deliver it come from our home. Bummer!

JoHn Knox-update!

Guess what? I spelled John's name wrong.(surprise) Here is the story again with corrections. It is often said the one person can not make much of a difference. Whowever said that has not met BBS member John Knox. His gentle but presistent nudging has created a hugely successful Blues Jam at the Reef. Every other week he blends egos and instrurments into beautiful music. Boise and the Blues Society are lucky to have John round.

Thanks Johnbbs-drum-web.jpg By the way John put in his own money to help the BBS Jam aquire a preminent drum kit. This fantasic looking set is a dream come true.

Jerimiah James

We Better Honky Tonk Up this Joint.:Jeremiah James. April 1st, 2006 Big Easy Concert House, Boise

When you meet an artist away from thier art or out of the studio you never know if they will be good. Lucky enough to meet Jeremiah “off stage, ” I quickly warmed to his wit and easy demeanor.

Jeremiah is one of the features artists for the Artists of Idaho Recognition Faire, so I stopped by the Easy to take a couple of promo shots of him performing. It was wonderful, with a Papst in hand and that same easy demeanor he entertained the small but appreciative crowd with an effortless charm that is not often seen.

His lyrics were original yet some how timeless. With a voice that fans rightfully likened to Johnny Cash, James finds humor in the steps we all take on the long lives journeyjames-easy-web.jpg.
