As they stand on the wall between freedom and chaos. A lone bugle plays taps as a red, white and blue flag is folded. Another soldier has fallen. A mothers cry joins the tune.

Shake a vets hand.

John Collias

The work of John Collias is currently on display ar Dawson Taylor, downtown Boise. If you are old enough, you may remember John’s work in The Idaho Statesman. For years he sketched one of Idaho’s distinguished citizens for the Sunday paper. This exhibit is a tribute to John’s diverse talent. on the walls are everything form rough sketches to fully produced posters. You will find everything from a finalist for the new american quarter to a bold ad for a 70’s Marching band competition.

Over the last few months I have been lucky enough to catch a couple of cups of coffee with John. He is as gracious as talented. Take the time to stop in and see this body of art. You will not be disappointed. colliasshow-web.jpg

Can you spot my grandfather? I'll give you a hint. Look at the smile.

Hope your candidate won. If not remember that for most the bureaucrat that set the fine for a parking meter may have more effect on your life!!!

Nathan Jay Moody

nathanjay.jpgNathan Jay MoodyEvil Woman Walk Away

B’s Boy makes good.

Nathan the dynamo behind the recently disbanded Vincent Vegas and one of Lori b!’s boys makes a very strong debut statement with his Evil Woman Walk Away CD.

Nathan's plays guitar with a power and subtly that is masterful. Were many with Moody’s talent would be tempted to show off just fiery licks and Van Halen quickness, Nathan relies on his instruments dynamics to entertain. Sure, there are advanced, quick, burning solos on this disk, however it is the quieter moments I enjoyed. The key to Evil Woman may well be Nathan's balancing act. You will find yourself reveling in the contrast of hard and soft, fast and slow of his music.

Must not have been the best of years for Nathan on the romantic front. The title tracks lyrics bristles with romantic tension. Other songs refer to pistol packin mamas and other vamps. Like many a great musicain before him Nathan leverages his heartache into fantastic songs.

My only concern about this disc is a minor one. The production is a bit over the top at times. Lot’s of overdubbing and fancy audio tricks. For my vote the strong material sometimes gets burried behind the flash. nathan-web.jpg

Nathan, my friend this is a great CD. You have come a long ways in a very short time.

If you don’t vote-Don’t bitch

votehere-web.jpgVoting is such a privilege. At my polling place today, I was meet my happy faces. Didn’t matter to them how I was going to vote, it was that I was voting. Yes, I will admit to some concern as to our political system. It may be broken, it may even be beyond repair. However without the intelligent, informed concern of the citizens. Our democracy will surely fail. So VOTE today please. It will make you feel better.

Vote early-often

This TUESDAY, November 7, is Election Day. To find out where you vote, and lots of other voting info go to idahovotes.gov/idaho votes and insert your zip code. Polls are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Cup a Joe

coffeeposter.gifBeen hanging out in my favorite coffee houses lately. Dawson Taylor Downtown and Moxie on Vista. Life is good at both. With the ever oppressive Starbucks opening on every corner, it is so cool to see these local joints thriving. The “new” Moxie has a swagger and verve the you can feel. The barristas are quick and quick whited(witted). The decor of the Vista Moxie is modern and warm. As I sit here the place is alive with a mix of students, businesspeople and a slacker or two.

DT-DT is the center of downtown commerce. Dawson’s twirls and spins all day. The friendliest staff by far and a “cuppa” coffee is still a buck. Try getting a coffee at Starbucks for a buck. No they want the stars, and maybe the moon as well.

Gotta go, back to my cup of Joe.

Fall for Boise-The Collaborations Project

fire-dancer-web.jpg
The Collaborations Project was the closing event for Fall for Boise, it celebrated community and welcomed the winter with dance, music, song and fire. Featuring over 100 local artists, this collaboration is different each fall and always exciting. Sponsored by Capital City Development Corporation, the Boise City Arts Commission and the office of the Mayor of the City of Boise, this event took place October 27th outdoors on the Grove Plaza at dusk. It was free to the public.

This annual event was fantastic, the costumes were beautiful, the music powerful, the oratory witty, and did I mention the dancing. It was a visual delight. Fire, and Falminco dancers, a contortionist, even a percussion group that played a typewriter.

Well done. Very well done.

90210

images.jpgWe are so polite! When a clerk asks for our zip code we just smile and say oh, 83705. Why? If the Veterans Administration can’t protect the Vets Social Security number list, why would anyone think that Burlington Coat Factory “is just going to use it to locate our next store.” Huh? This is a data mining scam and a scary one at that. With a name, credit card number and zip code just about any of your other personal info can be detrimined. As a wise woman once said, "just because I'm parinoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get me." When they ask me? I grin and say 90210. Most checkers just fire it in. A few others savvy enough to get the joke smile. My favorite are the ones that are miffed and try to argue.

Here are a few other good zips. North Pole, Alaska 99705 ATHOL, ID 83801 ASSAWOMAN, VA 23302 NO NAME, CO 81601 UNCERTAIN, TX 75661

Hopefully some clerk looking at the data someday will know they have been duped.

A Vodka that is good for you?

Lushes everwhere rejoice!Over heard a salesman pitching the virtues of an "Organic" Vodka the other night. Is it just me, but can you make Vodka out of something that isn't organic? vodka.jpg This ad may be closer to the truth!

Boise at Night, Formerly Bar Update-Formerly Bar Deathwatch!-The Hanger

Can the Carl at The Hanger hang on? With the ever more repressive atmosphere that is downtown Boise. The Hanger is reportedly in for radical changes and may even closed. The landlord has been let’s say “Challenged” to come up with an exit strategy for the current owner. Street talk has it that either Great Basin Pizza or the sub shop next door will take over the space. Could Ted be looking for another location? boise at night1.jpg

Boise at Night-Hannahs

boiseatnight2.jpgIn other news, Hannahs has dropped live music on Thursdays. A fancy DJ rig now rest were Rockie normally struts. The rumor mill has Hannahs thinking of dropping music on Wednesdays. Wow! Can the "Agents" of change be tired of Ms. Johnsons' act. Good thing she knows the boss.
